A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
The aniseed and bergamot combination hits with surprisingly herbaceous force, the licorice notes wrestling against bright citrus before raspberry muscling in with syrupy sweetness. It's an almost jarring collision—less unified composition, more fruit-and-spice argument happening on your skin.
The florals emerge cautiously as the opening settles, but they're promptly subsumed by cinnamon's warmth and the heliotrope's powder-soft sweetness. Tonka bean and vanilla begin their slow descent into the base, transforming the overall character into something distinctly gourmand—less perfume, more edible cologne.
What remains is primarily benzoin's sticky resin and vanilla's creamy sweetness, all woody undertones from cedarwood providing minimal grounding. By hour four, if it's still perceptible at all, it's a soft, almost imperceptible amber-musk whisper that barely registers beyond immediate skin proximity.
Maui Mango Surf occupies a peculiar space in the fragrance landscape—a fragrance mist that commits fully to candied chaos rather than pursuing sophistication. Jean-François Latty has constructed something deliberately saccharine, where aniseed's liquorice-like sweetness tangles immediately with raspberry's jammy brightness, creating an almost cough-syrup opening that feels less Hawaiian beach resort and more retro American candy counter.
The spice accord dominates throughout, driven by cinnamon's warmth meeting the dusty powder of heliotrope. This floral heart is notably restrained despite its breadth—the lily of the valley, carnation, and jasmine exist as whispers beneath the sweeter elements rather than as distinctive individuals. Tonka bean and vanilla in the base amplify what's already a predominantly gourmand composition, whilst benzoin adds a resinous adhesiveness that attempts to glue these disparate elements together.
