Van Cleef & Arpels
A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
The aldehydes arrive first as a subtle crystalline shimmer, almost imperceptible before the pink pepper announces itself with genuine bite—sharp, almost peppercorn-like rather than the soft floral pepper many expect. Rose emerges simultaneously, cool and slightly astringent, as though the patchouli is already restraining it from becoming anything remotely sweet.
The patchouli settles into something refined and austere, its earthiness deliberately suppressed by cashmere wood's airy softness. The rose-patchouli dialogue becomes the fragrance's centrepiece, but it never coheres into a unified sweetness; instead, they maintain respectful distance, like two instruments in separate rooms.
White musk takes centre stage as everything else fades, transforming the composition into something almost soapy and transparent. The patchouli persists as a ghost note, earthy and faint, whilst the fresh accord lingers as a cool, almost aquatic whisper—a surprisingly delicate conclusion to what began as a spiced proposition.
Patchouli Blanc occupies an intriguing middle ground between earthy restraint and luminous refinement. Jérôme Epinette has crafted something that resists the typical patchouli narrative—there's no murky, tobacco-stained basement here. Instead, the patchouli arrives bleached and crystalline, its earthiness tempered by a rose that leans cool and slightly aldehydic rather than romantic. The pink pepper provides essential friction, a spicy bite that prevents the composition from settling into powdery complacency.
What makes this fragrance intellectually compelling is how it weaponises its synthetic accords (52%) without ever announcing them. The cashmere wood doesn't smell like actual wood so much as an impression of softness—almost a textural descriptor rendered as scent. White musk underpins everything with a clean, almost soapy base that feels deliberately at odds with the earthy patchouli heart, creating a productive tension between comfort and strangeness.
