Une Nuit Nomade
A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
The black plum hits like compote spiked with cardamom, its jammy sweetness immediately undercut by the citric snap of mandarin and a wave of labdanum that smells more like cured leather than soft amber. There's an almost medicinal sharpness, a hint of camphor that clears the sinuses before the smoke rolls in.
The orris emerges with its characteristic earthy powder, creating an odd but compelling contrast against the ylang-ylang's creamy, slightly funky floralcy. Vanilla threads through the labdanum without sweetening it much—instead, it seems to intensify the resinous, almost balsamic quality, while the spices persist like embers that refuse to die down.
What remains is a skin-warmed blend of benzoin and sandalwood, still smoky but softer now, with the patchouli adding a woody, slightly musty depth. The sweetness finally settles into something approachable, though the amber never quite loses its teeth—it's mellowed but not domesticated, like incense smoke clinging to wool.
Ambre Khandjar is a fiercely spiced resin bomb that treats amber not as a cosy, vanillic haze but as something altogether more feral. The opening shock of black plum against mandarin creates a sticky, wine-dark sweetness that immediately collides with the labdanum absolute—thick, leathery, and smouldering like incense left to char. This isn't the polite amber of department store flankers; it's the kind that leaves a smoky stain on your clothes and makes people lean in with wary curiosity.
Jérôme Di Marino layers the resinous heart with orris absolute, which brings a rooty, almost earthy powderiness that keeps the composition from tipping into dessert territory despite the vanilla's presence. The ylang-ylang adds an indolic, slightly petrol-like floralcy that jostles against the sweetness, creating tension rather than harmony. There's a deliberate roughness here—the patchouli reads more medicinal than hippie-ish, and the benzoin amplifies the smoky accords rather than softening them.
