Mercedes-Benz
A unique visual signature based on accords, character, and seasonality
The blackcurrant hits with immediate tartness, almost aggressive in its lack of sweetness, immediately shadowed by bergamot's distinctive bitter-citrus punch. Within moments, the peppermint begins its insistent whisper, already hinting at the green pivot to come.
The apple emerges with surprising prominence, merging with the peppermint into something vaguely toothpaste-like, herbaceous and clean-edged rather than fruity. The synthetic accords become unmistakable here—a polished, slightly waxy quality that reinforces the composition's clinical precision rather than softening it.
The ambrox and patchouli establish a woody framework, though both remain surprisingly muted and austere; the musk remains near-invisible, offering almost no sensual warmth as the scent gradually dissolves into a faintly spiced, largely transparent second skin.
Mercedes-Benz Select presents itself as a crisp, almost austere take on unisex fragrance—the olfactory equivalent of minimalist Scandinavian design rendered in juice form. Olivier Cresp has constructed something deliberately restrained here, a composition that prioritises clarity over complexity.
The blackcurrant and bergamot opening is bracingly herbaceous rather than sweetly jammy; this isn't the plump fruit of a dessert wine but rather the tart snap of cassis leaf, threaded through with bergamot's bitter-edged citrus brightness. What makes Select genuinely interesting is how the heart pivots toward green, peppermint-tinged territory—the apple that emerges feels almost herbal, slightly tart, catching you off-guard with its structural rigidity rather than offering any stone fruit roundness.
